An Inclusive Dance Experience
The DanceAbility® 30-Hour Intensive Workshop is an immersive introduction to the philosophy, principles, and practice of the DanceAbility method.
Through movement exploration, demonstrations, and studio practice, participants discover how improvisation can create meaningful dance experiences for people with and without disabilities.
DanceAbility is a contemporary dance practice grounded in:
-
Improvisation
-
Accessibility
-
Creative collaboration
Rather than focusing on technical ability, DanceAbility values expression, relationship, and presence, making it a powerful tool for building community and fostering belonging through movement.
Participants will explore principles of inclusive practice including:
-
improvisational structures for mixed-ability groups
-
communication
-
safety
-
consent
At its core, DanceAbility shows that when people move together with openness and respect, our movement becomes a source of creativity and community.
What You Will Learn
Participants will explore the five foundational themes of the DanceAbility method:
Action and Response
Understanding cause and effect in movement and building awareness of self and others.
Numbers Work
Using group structures to support inclusion and teach composition.
Follow or Lead
Developing listening, interpretation, and collaborative movement relationships.
Physicality and Touch
Exploring safe, consensual touch as a tool for communication and creativity.
Variations on the Theme
Adapting exercises to ensure meaningful participation for people with diverse abilities.
These tools can be applied in dance, theater, arts therapies, education, and community inclusion work.
